RAFFLE!

We’re doing a raffle! In order to help fund our 2019 Veteran student-beekeepers we’re raffling some great prizes! Tickets are $10 each, or 6 for $50. The proceeds will help us provide our program for another 10 students in 2019.

Your raffle ticket gives you a chance at winning a prize, the top prize being a $1000.00 gift certificate to the Peppermill Resort Spa Casino in Reno, NV.* There is also a Champagne Balloon Ride prize, valued at $500.00, with an additional prize that we are waiting on confirmation from the donor. There will also be a few gift baskets.

Most importantly, your $10 will help us help more Veteran students like those featured in the video below (or follow this link.)

Your $10, or $50, or more will help us make a difference in the lives of more veterans. None of our personnel are paid, we’re all volunteers at Bees4Vets. All of the money raised will go directly to supporting this program that helps local Veterans with PTSD/TBI. Please, buy a ticket or 6 or more! Your generosity will benefit someone who needs our help.

You can purchase tickets from any Bees4Vets officer, director or volunteer or from our raffle page. See https://bees4vets.org/raffle to purchase tickets online or for further info.

Thank you.

Thank you all Veterans

Bees4Vets is grateful to every veteran who served our nation, protected our freedoms, and answered the call for self-sacrifice. You are our heroes, and our family.

We are humbled and honored to serve each of our Bees4Vets student-beekeepers. Thank you for all that you have given us, and allowing us to give back with our honey bees. We wish you all peace on this day of remembrance, and pride, of our armed service members.

“True heroism is remarkably sober, very undramatic. It is not the urge to surpass all others at whatever cost, but the urge to serve others at whatever cost”. Arthur Ash

Thank you for the donations

Two bee keeping vendors made donations to Bees4Vets this year. Those donations directly help support the equipment needs of our program and students.

I want to thank Brushy Mountain Bee Farm and GloryBee for their generous support of our program and students. Without the support of the beekeeping community we wouldn’t have as nice a program for our veterans.

If you would like to support our program, we can take donations via PayPal, check, or cash as well as donations of equipment. We also accept volunteers to help our students lift and move hive boxes, etc.

Thank you!

We want to give a big “Thank you!” to the Community Foundation of Western Nevada for their support of Bees4Vets and our Veteran beekeepers.

On July 25th The Community Foundation of Western Nevada awarded Bees4Vets a $500.00 general support grant. This grant will directly support our program and students. We can’t thank them enough for their generosity and belief in our program.

Student’s inspect their hives

Student’s inspect their hives

Every week our student’s inspect their hives.  They get to see the hives develop and get to compare them to each other.  Every hive is different, some grow faster, gather more nectar, etc.  Some grow rapidly, some barely grow at all.  Our students get to see it all, hives that go queenless, how to combine hives, how to make splits and all the other normal tasks of beekeeping.

Students

Here are two of our students inspecting a hive May 28th.

The hives are growing and the students are learning more every week.  We couldn’t be happier with how the year is going so far.

Bees4Vets apiary June 4 2018

This is the apiary as of June 4, 2018.  Most of the hives are doing great and we’ve gotten a couple of spare queens mated.

Virgin Queen 051818

When checking a hive today, we found it ready to swarm. (If it hasn’t already, couldn’t find the original queen, but the hive was overflowing with bees.) The pic is of a virgin queen. When we pulled a frame, the cell split off of the frame. One of our volunteers looked and said their was a bee in it and split open the cell and out she came. She sat on his glove and licked at the honey on it for a little bit and then crawled off onto a frame we put into a split.

One of two virgin queens we found today along with 3 more splits worth of really big, healthy looking queen cells. So, one 4 box high 8 frame hive (all medium boxes) made 5 splits and still have a really healthy hive left.

It was really cloudy and trying to rain, so we couldn’t look real hard for a queen in the remaining hive. If there isn’t one when we go back, we’ll merge one of the splits back into this hive after they’ve mated or merge a nuc we have as a place for a spare queen into the hive.

Thank you Nevada!

A big thank you to everyone who supported us during the NVEnergy Power of Good Giveaway. Although we made it to the finals, we didn’t place in the top 3 after the final count. Nevertheless – Thank you! Thank you to everyone who voted for us; everyone who coerced, begged, pleaded and asked their friends and family to participate in the giveaway. Excellent programs that help our active and veteran military community did win – and that’s what it’s all about, serving those that selflessly served our nation. We received tremendous exposure in the community and have received emails from all over the U.S. about our program. We couldn’t bee happier! Thank you again, and stay tuned – bee season is almost here!
