We need your help, winter has not been kind to the bees

Hive losses this winter have been heavy all over the country. Unfortunately, our apiary isn’t any different. At the high point last summer we had 32 hives. We went into fall with 26. We have come out of winter with 7, and only 2 of those look reasonably strong.

For us, this is a huge loss. We now need to replace more hives than anticipated and, since our students graduate with a hive and we don’t have hives to split, we need top purchase 6 additional hives for them, too. That means we need to purchase about 30 hives total in the next few weeks (and find someone who has nucleus colonies available for purchase still.) These will cost is between $160 and $200 each, assuming prices don’t go up dramatically due to the increased demand.

So, this is where you come in. Our only way to purchase the hives we need is to ask all of you to help us out. We need to raise sufficient funds to pay for the hives and only have 4 to 6 weeks to do so. There are a couple of options for how you can help us out.

Any donation will be a help, no donation is too small or too large. (We use PayPal for credit card processing. They take out 2.2% plus $0.30 per transaction. You do not need a PayPal account to donate.)

If you want to see what one of our students has to say about the program, please watch the video below, it will only take 60 seconds.

Thank you for your support of our program and your willingness to help us help our veterans and first responders.

RAFFLE!

We’re doing a raffle! In order to help fund our 2019 Veteran student-beekeepers we’re raffling some great prizes! Tickets are $10 each, or 6 for $50. The proceeds will help us provide our program for another 10 students in 2019.

Your raffle ticket gives you a chance at winning a prize, the top prize being a $1000.00 gift certificate to the Peppermill Resort Spa Casino in Reno, NV.* There is also a Champagne Balloon Ride prize, valued at $500.00, with an additional prize that we are waiting on confirmation from the donor. There will also be a few gift baskets.

Most importantly, your $10 will help us help more Veteran students like those featured in the video below (or follow this link.)

Your $10, or $50, or more will help us make a difference in the lives of more veterans. None of our personnel are paid, we’re all volunteers at Bees4Vets. All of the money raised will go directly to supporting this program that helps local Veterans with PTSD/TBI. Please, buy a ticket or 6 or more! Your generosity will benefit someone who needs our help.

You can purchase tickets from any Bees4Vets officer, director or volunteer or from our raffle page. See https://bees4vets.org/raffle to purchase tickets online or for further info.

Thank you.

*Our Raffle is not sponsored by the Peppermill Resort Spa Casino.

Feb 25, 2018

It’s Feb 25th, 46 degrees outside and the bees are flying and cleaning out the hive. It looks like they lost some brood with the colder weather we are having.

Video – Tim Polling: A True Bee-liever – West Virginia

This is a great Video from the West Virginia Veterans and Warriors to Agriculture program.  Some people are aking, “Why bees?”  Here’s at least one answer.

Pollen 020218

February second and it’s in the low 60s out. This is way too warm for Reno this time of year. I went to check on the Nuc in our back yard and found the girls bringing in pollen.

4 More hives installed

We want to thank Dan and Trish for allowing us to place hives on their property.  We got all 4 installed today in the wind, but were done and home before the rain hit.
